Clinically Inclusive Skincare

While skin function is universal, studies show that melanin-rich skin experiences more dramatic disruptions in microbiome balance, increased trans epidermal water loss, and more visible signs of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Plantkos is formulated with melanated skin in mind, using ingredient concentrations that are effective for all genders, skin types, and tones.

Skin Microbiome

The skin microbiome is an invisible ecosystem that lives on the outermost layer of the skin. It is made up of billions of microbes that act as skin’s first line of defense to fight infection, protect against external aggressors, and prevent chronic conditions like eczema, rosacea, and acne. Like a fingerprint, everyone’s microbiome is unique. Lifestyle, diet, geography, and ethnicity all contribute to its composition. But there’s one universal truth that applies to everyone: A balanced, biodiverse microbiome is essential for healthy skin.

Each of our certified Microbiome-Friendly formulas are proven to support the microbiome’s natural functions and maintain balance.

Skin Barrier Function

The skin barrier is an intricate matrix of keratinocytes that are bound together by fatty acids, sterols, and ceramides, and it is highly dependent on two epidermal proteins: filaggrin and claudins. These proteins aid in keeping toxins out, sealing moisture in, and balancing skin’s pH levels, all functions of a strong skin barrier. All Plantkos formulas are clinically proven to activate the production of filaggrin and claudin, resulting in a healthy skin barrier.

Hydration

Our formulas have been clinically tested and proven to increase baseline hydration levels and elevate moisture retention at the skin’s deepest epidermal layers for over 24 hours after use. Their proven ability to restore the microbiome and strengthen the skin barrier further supports optimal hydration by keeping essential moisture sealed into the skin.

Skin Irritation

Microbiome disruption is one of the leading causes of inflammation in our skin. All of our products are clinically tested and proven to be non-irritating and non-inflammatory, and they maintain skin barrier function.

Dark Spots

Hyperpigmentation surfaces in skin for many reasons — cell death, scars from acne and blemishes, UV exposure, and natural sensitivity — but most often, the underlying cause is the same: chronic disruption of the microbiome and a weakened skin barrier. When skin’s outermost layers are compromised, deeper layers are vulnerable to disruption, including melanin production. Melanin-rich skin is more susceptible to melanin migration, which occurs when keratinocytes attach to melanocytes and bring them to the surface. Our formulas deliver dual action benefits, inhibiting melanin production and minimizing the melanin migration.

Our Process

Our product testing is conducted on an innovative 3D human skin model. These skin models — developed over 14 years and featured in 30 scientific publications — are made from primary human skin cells (keratinocytes) and collagen-producing cells (fibroblasts). They are developed with vital biological components that restore normal skin function and fully support the microbiome.

Our skin models produce their own extracellular matrix, allowing them to mimic crucial natural processes like the production of collagen. This allows for a new level of accuracy in product testing with no human subjects required.

This scientific breakthrough allows Plantkos® to effectively target, test, and address skin’s most common concerns.
